How to avoid the crowds

We visited a week before Thanksgiving to avoid the crowds, just as the Christmas lights were going up and the holiday spirit was in the air. We went on November 22-23, and it was ideal since there were hardly any lines for the stores. No waiting for ice cream, bread, or even at the restaurants! I loved it! A lot of bloggers warned about long lines, and I don't like wasting time, especially since we only had a few days and little ones. Also, waiting in the cold is no fun!

Stopover: Snoqualmie Falls

We left Kitsap County around 9 a.m., snacks packed, coffee in hand, and started our first family adventure in Washington as a family of four.

We made a mandatory stop at Snoqualmie Falls at 11 a.m. before heading to Leavenworth. My little one needed to stretch and use the bathroom, and the other needed a diaper change, so it was a perfect stop for us. Here you can grab some pastries, snacks, coffee, souvenirs, and they even have umbrellas and other travel essentials if you need one. Snoqualmie Falls Park is known as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Northwest, and yes!, it was breathtaking. However, it doesn't compare to Niagara Falls, Canada, which is still the most magnificent waterfall I've ever seen.

We stayed for an hour, then got back on the road and arrived in Leavenworth around 2 p.m.

Where to Stay in Leavenworth

Check in: Hampton Inn & Suites
Address: 301 Ward Strasse, Leavenworth, WA, 98826, USA

Convenient Location for Gas and Groceries

It's walking distance from Safeway and the gas station, also their gas prices were lower than other stations we saw. From here, downtown Leavenworth is only 5 minutes away by car!

Wonderful Complimentaries

I loved Hampton InnThey offer free parking and a pack 'n play upon request, which is great for families with small kids. We didn't know about it, but Joylene kindly offered it to us, making our stay easier. They also provide complimentary coffee and hot chocolate in the lobby. If you forget any personal essentials like a toothbrush, comb, and more, just ask at the reception for complimentary items. It reminds me of the hotels in Japan, where everything is provided so you can focus on your trip.

Delightful Breakfast

A warm breakfast is included, with options like waffles, sausage, eggs, fruit juice, apples, oranges, cereal, yogurt, and more. They even have to-go bags, which are perfect for early hiking trips. The hospitality was outstanding, and I’ll definitely return with my family!

After checking in, we drove to Leavenworth Adventure Park immediately, but without a reservation, we had to wait. Booking online turned out to be better, so we reserved for the next day. We still waited in line, but at least we had a spot for the coaster instead of just hoping for short lines.

12 Exciting Things To Do in Leavenworth, Washington

Things To Do with Kids in Leavenworth, Washington

1. Giant Pretzel at Rhein Haus Leavenworth

Rhein Haus Leavenworth
Address: 707 US Hwy 2 Unit F, Leavenworth, WA 98826

Warm, spacious, and wood-hued Bavarian-style eatery serving traditional German plates and beers. We ordered the House Baked Pretzel with Beer Cheese for 10 USD, and the Group Charcuterie, or as they call it, the Pretzel-Cuterie Board, which comes with a giant pretzel, sausages, and dips for 33 USD.

The yellow dip was great, but the white one was my favorite—maybe it was beer cheese. Saul liked the yellow dip, which was thicker and stickier compared to the creamy and delicious white one.

People recommended the "Haus Giant Pretzel" with the three dips, and the Rhein Haus Burger is also good. Let me know if it’s really that good in the comments. Next stop is ice cream; I can’t leave a place without trying their local ice cream—it’s just a thing I do. The next place is known for its amazing flavors.

2. Blackberry Fool at Whistlepunk Ice Cream Co.

Whistlepunk Ice Cream Co.
Address: 707 US Hwy 2, Suite C, Leavenworth, WA 98826

We ordered double scoops in a cup and had Blackberry Fool and Pistachio. Both were amazing! The Blackberry Fool was creamy and berry delicious, while the Pistachio was creamy and nutty, and neither was too sweet.

People also recommend Umpqua huckleberry ice cream with chocolate, chocolate brownie, or the ice cream sampler. I totally forgot about the sampler and will try that next time.

3. Magical Horse Wagon Ride

Horse Wagon Ride
Address: 8th and Front Street, Leavenworth, WA 98826

This was one of the highlights of the trip. There’s something magical about riding a horse in a Bavarian-inspired town where all the Christmas lights adorn the buildings. It felt like a scene from a Hallmark movie and was surreal. I’m glad our little one wanted to do this. There’s no reservation; you just go to the spot where they park the horse wagon, and it’s first-come, first-served. Fortunately, there was only one family before us, so we got to do it! It was amazing. I even prepared my little one not to expect to ride the horse, as there might be a lot of people queuing up for it, or the horse might be tired and need to go home early. But no, the horse was there, and the ladies were all smiles and welcoming when asked about the ride.

It’s a bit pricey; normally, it’s around 20 to 30 USD, but with the holiday season coming, the fee was 50 USD for two people and 5 USD for additional people. Kids count as people, so there’s no kiddie price. The feeling was ecstatic, and my little one was in awe of every direction, making the ride even more fun. I felt like a child myself, with the feeling of riding a horse-drawn carriage and hearing the horse’s footsteps bringing Disney movies to mind, like the Prince Charming scenes with the magical love story.

We rode with Sydney, and she was a darling! Bjorn was the horse’s name; he’s a Belgian Draft Horse breed, great for pulling wagons. He’s a huge horse, weighing about 2,000 lbs. She said he eats a lot of salad, hay, apples, oats, and carrots. He looked happy, doesn’t appear weary, well groomed, and I hope he’s having a great time too. I always feel bad when animals have to do labor for humans, but Bjorn looked well taken care of—no whipping, no angry sounds, no froth in his mouth, and his hair was shiny and healthy-looking. I assume they really brush it every day.

4. Espresso Cookie at Gingerbread Factory

Gingerbread Factory
Address: 829 Front St, Leavenworth, WA 98826

After our magical ride, we went to Gingerbread factory for some sweet and tasty treat. We ordered an espresso-frosted chocolate cookie for 4.25 USD and a tiny tot or a small gingerbread for 1.50 USD. I loved my cookie; it was huge but really sweet for me. Even though I broke it in half to share with my friend, it took me three days to finish it. I know I’m not big on cookies, but I love the espresso taste. It became like my refreshing treat after a meal. Meanwhile, my little one devoured his gingerbread man in no time!

They sell cute souvenirs here, and I learned the word “schatzi,” which was written on some of their cookies, means “sweetheart” in German. Simply adorable!

People also recommend their seasonal strawberry matcha, German chocolate cookie, traditional sweetheart cookie, and German chocolate cupcake.

5. Fridge Magnets at Icicle Creek Clothing

Icicle Creek Clothing
Address: 807 Front St, Leavenworth, WA 98826

This big store offers a wide selection of souvenirs you can think of, like sweaters, hats, and so much more.

I like to get my souvenirs ahead of time so I don’t forget about them and can just get it over with, which means fewer things on my mind. It’s surprising how having kids fills up your to-do list, and getting things done right away and not missing anything feels so good, like you’ve made motherhood easy just by doing that little task earlier than you’re supposed to. I know most mothers out there get me; if not, then whatever works for you, right?!

We got a Leavenworth Magnet for 10.99 USD and a Toy Science Lava for kids for 5.99 USD.

6. Sausage Sampler at Leavenworth Sausage Garten

Leavenworth Sausage Garten
Address: 636 Front St #G, Leavenworth, WA 98826

This place was packed during lunchtime and even after that, so going during the late hours really helps avoid the crowds, especially if you have a little one who loves to have fun and a stroller blocking the way. It really helps! We went here for dinner before 7, and there weren't many people compared to around 5-6ish. No queue, we got to chat with the staff, listened to their recommendations, and even had a beer tasting for the famous Hofbrau beer.

We ordered the Sausage Sampler with three choices of sausages for 28 USD, a Hofbrau Dunkel 16 oz for 9 USD. I’m fond of beers with a more bold flavor, if you want something a little refreshing and light, go for the original, and a side of German Potato Salad for 7 USD.

The Bratwurst, Kielbasa, and Bockwurst were my favorites! Along with mustard seasonings like the Coney Island, sweet and sour, honey mustard—you can never go wrong with that—and the stoneground mustard.

Other options on their menu include Currywurst, Hot Italian, Baconwurst, Beef Frank, Chicken Apple, German Potato Salad, and Beer: Hofbrau Biers. I heard Icicle Brewery, Apple cider, cranberry cider, and beer with lemonade are also good options. A lot of people seemed to like the sides, like the sauerkraut and the cranberry mustard, which always run out. I was curious about that one.

This is within walking distance of Whistlepunk Ice Cream Co. and Rhein Haus. Even better, as
the City Hall and the Library, where we parked the car is right across the street from the restaurant,  We had an amazing night in this Bavarian-style city of Washington.

Day 2 in Leavenworth

The next day, we’re heading for an exciting ride at Leavenworth Adventure Park, then taking a mandatory picture at the Leavenworth Welcome Sign, walking around the Waterfront park overlooking the beautiful mountains, enjoying delectable pork schnitzel at Andreas Keller, and buying some Danish pastry for the road trip home. It’s going to be another wonderful day at Leavenworth. Read more here to see the exciting post about it.

7. Heart-Pumping Ride at Leavenworth Adventure Park

Leavenworth Adventure Park
Address: 9342 Icicle Rd, Leavenworth, WA 98826
Open year-round
Free parking
No entrance fee

This small amusement park offers an alpine coaster and also features a mining sluice and wall climbing, though these are closed during the winter season, so we didn’t get to try them. Take note, they are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Must-Try: Alpine Coaster
Book online: Alpine Coaster Booking

We had a reservation, but still waited about 30 minutes for the ride. It seems reservations and walk-ins were combined, extending the line. The alpine coaster was exhilarating but not as extreme as a roller coaster. My 4-year-old enjoyed the ride with his dad while I rode alone. Initially, you ride it going up, then you reach a point where you control it yourself. You have to lift two levers to move, and there's a brake if it feels too fast. Some parts were bumpy, making it seem like you might be thrown from your seat, especially near the finish line. But we finished with smiles all around.

For a keepsake, we paid 8.69 USD each for a digital copy of our ride photo, which was sent via email.

8. Welcome to Leavenworth Sign

The sign is near Leavenworth Square or Front Street Park, along the road and on the sidewalk.
Address: 800 Front St, Leavenworth, WA 98826

In winter, this park turns into a snow hill where you can bring a sled and slide down. They also set up Christmas trees, and the art and market open close to the Christmas season.

We drove back to the Bavarian Village and took the mandatory picture in front of the Welcome Sign! It was great as no one else was there, allowing us to take pictures without any pressure.

9. Nature Walk at Waterfront Park

Waterfront Park
Address: Leavenworth, WA 98826
Distance from the center: 7–8 minutes from the Horse Wagon Ride/Rhein Haus

Waterfront Park offers peaceful trails for walking and biking, along with picnic and play areas. We wanted to enjoy nature before lunch, so we headed to the park. Initially, we got a bit lost, ending up behind the hospital, where we found a long trail leading to the water. With a stroller and hungry bellies, we preferred a shorter route. We then found another entrance closer to the bridge. The water was clear and refreshing, but as it started to drizzle and the boys got hungrier, we had to shorten our walk.

10. Delectable Lunch at Andreas Keller Restaurant

Andreas Keller Restaurant
Address: 829 Front St, Leavenworth, WA 98826

For lunch, we chose Andreas Keller after hearing wonderful recommendations from our front desk. Fortunately, there was no wait, and we were seated immediately—one of the perks of visiting during the off-season!

The reviews consistently highlight the Spaetzle, served as a side with many main dishes, along with the Bavarian Beef Goulash. If your group consists of 2 to 4 people, consider reserving the barrel booth—a unique dining experience that adds a special touch to any celebration.

We ordered the Bavarian Beef Goulash, paired with the famous Spaetzle for 25.99 USD, and the Jägerschnitzel, a breaded pork dish, for 28.99 USD. I chose the schnitzel, and it was delightful, complemented by the mushroom sauce and pickled cabbage. The flavors were vibrant, not greasy, and the crunch was just right. My meal was thoroughly enjoyable. The Spaetzle was also a hit; my little one remarked that it reminded him of his favorite mac and cheese. Spaetzle, a German egg noodle or pasta, is softer and fluffier than regular pasta, practically melting in your mouth.

The ambiance was fantastic, the food outstanding, and the portion sizes were just right. We all left with smiles on our faces.

Best Night Ever!

Did I mention that we got lucky on our first night?! As we were walking near the Front Street Park, eating our ice cream, they were setting up the Christmas tree lights. Suddenly, the lights turned on for a few seconds, and it was so bright and cheerful. Everyone clapped, and that’s when we realized the lights were on! It was an amazing sight, and we couldn’t stop smiling. We got to see the lights without waiting for the big Christmas lighting event, which gets crowded. It was truly a night to remember.

Leavenworth, Washington, really lives up to the buzz! It was definitely worth our visit, and I'd recommend it to families looking for a German experience in the U.S. This adds to my list of unique places in the U.S., including Solvang, California, with its Danish charm, and Poulsbo, Washington, known for its Norwegian feel.
