Crazy Early Birds
Be there as early as possible to avoid the crowd and be the first to see them during their feeding time. We were at the terminal as early as 2 AM to catch the earliest bus. It will be a long, cold, and windy ride ahead of you; the earliest bus trips are not air-conditioned so better keep the window down and try to get some sleep. Don't forget to inform the ticket collector — commonly known as 'konduktor' — where you're heading. He's the one who collects the ticket fare and knows the road.
As we drove along the road, it was like we were at a rock concert, banging our heads together and swaying them from left to right as we drifted off to dreamland. We looked ridiculously tired and I had even planned to film my friends sleeping if only I wasn't so preoccupied with getting some sleep too. However, I couldn't resist the twilight zone and eventually forgot about it.
There are billboard signs placed near the road for the Butanding briefing area. However, if you plan to be as early as 6 in the morning like us, then it's more realistic and responsible to inform the 'konduktor' to not miss the stop point.
As I was saying we were busy sleeping and didn't notice that we were almost to our stop, maybe less than 50 minutes away. Good thing we informed the 'konduktor' ahead of time, and what perfect timing because another group was also heading to the same destination.

Back to the City or Sidetrip
Two options:
1. If you're in a hurry or need to catch your flight or a boat ride, then better get back to the city early as the traffic is unpredictable. Just wait for the Ceres Bus to pass by the road and make sure before hopping in that it has the sign going back to Cebu City.
2. Check out Tumalog Waterfalls. There are parked motorcycles nearby the briefing area. These guys will you take you to there. Entrance Fee: 20 PHP
If you still have ample time then you can drop by Our Lady of Immaculate Concepcion Church, one of the oldest churches in Cebu.
This was one of the best experiences in my life and one that would surely be in everyone's checklist after trying it. I would do this again if I could go back to Oslob. Take a chance to swim with the whale sharks; it's not every day that you get to be with these lovely creatures.

hi im jael zaragosa im planning to take on the adventure of oslob whaleshark snorkeling! i wanna know more about getting to oslob and the fees on it. since there is only the two of us on the trip, we are on a tight budget, i tried viewing for packages but they are all to expensive ranging from 3k to 5k per person.. eh yours is just around 500pesos to 1k.. i was hoping you could give me more details on it. do i randomly just talk out anybody there, or is there a place to inquire.. your help would be much appreciated. :) thank you! :D email me please jael_zaragosa@ymail.com
ReplyDeleteHey Zael!
DeleteLet me just say that's a cool name!
We did not get any package for this trip because you don't have to especially if you're from Cebu or not. Just make sure to pack your bags and be at the terminal as early as you can. The first bus leaves around 3pm, call the operator to make sure. We took that ride and had our whale shark watching before 7am. It's better to be there when only a few tourist have just arrived. There are few stalls around the area selling a bit pricy foods , so with less than a 100 you can already have a full meal, not bad. That's it! Bus fare (back in forth) :300+ and snorkeling 500.
You will actually have ample of time after the activity so you can check out Tumalog falls. Click on the link above.
Here you go! I hope you have a blast with the Gentle Giants.
Hi there,
DeleteI'm just asking the same question, how can you do snorkelling with the sharks just for 1000peso? :)
Hi,
ReplyDeleteCan I ask what's the exact name of the resort you've been to? I think there are a lot and prices differ from one another. Like Jael said there's packages for this tour but really expensive & with what you guys had... wow cheaper from the others.
We didn't avail any packages. We just headed there and pay the amount for the activity. If you're planning to stay overnight then I guess it would be better if you take the resorts package.
DeleteNo were not planning to stay overnight as we already booked our hotel in the city. thank you for your response. hope we could have the chance to go there with my three kids & find that cheaper rate for the whale shark watching.
DeleteI don't exactly know the name of the place but we just informed the driver and the ticket collector to drop us off at the Whale Shark activity place. I think its the official place for the activity because municipal employees were the ones who assisted us. Anyways God bless your trip and thank you for dropping by in my blog post.
DeleteHi! I wanted to experience swimming with the whale sharks as well. What resort exactly did you avail this experience for 500 php only?
ReplyDeleteHello,
DeleteIts not exactly a resort, the address is Natalio Bacalso, Tan-awan Oslob and they have the 500 pesos deal there for the whale shark watching. Have Fun! ^___^
hi, just wanted to ask about the bus tickets going to oslob, can you buy round trip tickets already at the terminal? planning to take a trip towards the last week of october.
ReplyDelete@khamorales They don't issue round trip tickets in the terminal. Just ask the bus driver what's the last trip for the day/night and be on the road to wait for the bus. Send my regards to the Gentle Giants of Oslob!
Deletehi, saan po kayo nagbanlaw after swimming with the whalesharks? :)
ReplyDeletewe are not planning to check in there. meron po ba don na pedeng magbayad lang for shower? or inclusive na yun sa 500? thanks!
Hello..
DeleteMeron don shower rooms pra mgbanlaw and change. No worries kc free of charge xa. Make sure maAga kyo then after ng activity pwd kyo punta sa Tumalog Falls, ang ganda don check out my post pra mkita mo. Have a blast!
Hi.. magkano bayad pag magpa picture under water?
ReplyDeleteHello Yacid,
Delete500 php ang snorkeling with the whale sharks. Bring your own underwater camera lng pra sa personal pics nyo wla pwd mahire don.
Hello, so is it safe to wander around the terminal until the first bus departure time (which is 3AM, right?)
ReplyDeleteThank you, nice blog by the way :D
Hey! Its quite safe in the bus terminal, no worries. Have fun! Hope this message gets you. Sorry for such a long delay.

Hi, my name is Rio Bulan. Nice blog... I will be attending SFC Island Conference in Oslob, Cebu this September. I just want to know 2 things.
ReplyDelete1. Is there a place where we can stay overnight near South Bus Terminal? (Something cheaper)
2. from 3AM trip, what time is the next available trip? (hoping there is 6-7AM)
Thank you & God Bless.
Hello Rio,
DeleteI'm really not sure about the nearest accommodation so I tried searching in google and found La Gloria Residence Inn nearby the terminal, maybe you can try to send them an email.
The bus usually leaves every 30 minutes. It is advisable to be in the terminal as early as possible to avoid the traffic. Just to double check the bus timing here's their phone number: Cebu City: (032) 345-8650.
Thank you for dropping by.
Hi Neoxclinke,
ReplyDeleteWhat I like most about Oslob is that they are charging less for locals than foreigners. I think our country need to promote this principle to encourage local tourism more. It's not a good thing if foreigners have enjoyed our natural resources while most Filipinos haven't.
Nevertheless we have enjoyed Oslob and swimming with the Tukis, truly a once in a lifetime experience (Not to mention scary too). We have our own adventure like you and if you may permit sharing my experience here:
http://mattdpinoytraveller.blogspot.com/2014/10/swimming-with-tukis-butanding-at-oslob.html
I'm planning to go back there next year to get better shots and hopefully meet same minded travelers like you. Maybe we can travel together next time.
And if it's okay with you, I'd like to add your blog on my followed list.
Thank you and more power.
Hey Vince,
DeleteI'm so glad you're one of the few who visited these gentle giants and you even managed to swim with them too. I considered it as one of the most memorable activity I've ever did in this lifetime.
By the way try to check my sidebar I've already added you to my wanderlust buddies. Thanks for adding my site to your followed list, its my pleasure and I'll try to post all my travels as much as possible.
I'll will be checking your site once in awhile so keep it updated as well.
Safe trips and Cheers to more travels to come!
Hi,
ReplyDeletevery cool and informative post for oslob experience i've ever read so far. I'm planning to visit Oslob this month ,if you don't mind may i ask few things? :P
-since I'm traveling solo, do they arrange boat to include a solo guest to another boat or i would have to rent my own boat?
-do boatman assist guest in swimming/snorkeling? i want to have an underwater picture with the gentle giants but im not a good swimmer :( hehe
Thank you in Advance! hope to read more of your posts :)
Hey,
DeleteI think going solo will not be a problem. A lot of tourist visits the spot to see the whale sharks everyday so the organizers around can slot you in whichever boat is available.
The boat guides will feed the whale sharks to keep them around so everyone can swim a few meters away from them. It's an overwhelming feeling of seeing them up close so make sure to pay for the snorkeling fees. Now regarding about the underwater camera they're offering rentals worth 500 pesos, just make sure to bring your own memory card with you. Just be friendly and beg someone with a smile to take your picture underwater.
Have fun and be safe. Respect the gentle giants.
Thanks for dropping by.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteAll year ba meron yung Whale Shark watching? Or may season lang? My family and I are planning to go there this month.

Hm the major expenses for two person going to oslob and whale watching
ReplyDeleteHei Ren, Maybe around 3,000 for 2 pax. Estimate bus 2 way trip 300 php, snorkeling plus camera rental 1,000 php, unless you bring your own camera and would like to just see the whale then you can save more. Add in some pocket money for food and side trips. I hope this helps. Thanks for dropping by. Apologies for the late response. Cheers!
DeleteHi. This is very informative, thank you! So traveling from Oslob to Cebu city the only way is to get the Ceres bus right? How long is the journey? We are staying in Oslob for 2 nights before heading to Mactan island and I'm just wondering what better way to travel to Cebu city from Oslob.. Any info will be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteHello there, Oslob back to Cebu City would take around 2-4 hours, depending on the traffic. The most convenient way is a private car but if you're not in a hurry take the ceres bus besides its air-conditioned and you get to feel the local life. Cheers!
