Mason County for a Day with Little Kids

Things to Do and Eat in Mason County with Little Kids

We're coming from Kitsap County and had some business to attend to in Shelton.
Since we were already in Mason County, we decided to make the most of our day. We enjoyed a relaxing day by strolling around town, savoring coffee and lunch, and discovering a lovely trail for the little ones to explore. Here’s a fun and easy itinerary for families with young children to explore and dine in Mason County. Let’s go!

How to get there: Shelton

By Car

  • Seattle to Shelton: 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • Tacoma to Shelton: 1 hour
  • Port Orchard to Shelton: 45 minutes

First Stop: Coffee and Pastries

  • Marmo
  • Address: 217 W Cota St, Shelton, WA 98584

Marmo has a small lovely art gallery and café, perfect for a coffee break, complete with toys and books for the little ones. I ordered an iced strawberry matcha and treated my child to a chocolate rye cookie. To my surprise, the cookie was delicious, even for someone who doesn’t usually enjoy cookies.

Explore Downtown Shelton

Afterwards, walk around Downtown Shelton, check out the small shops and feel the chill, small town vibe.

Second Stop: Lunch

  • Zen Ramen & Sushi Burrito
  • Address: 118 W Alder St, Shelton, WA 98584

The salmon poke was exceptional, and the chashu ramen broth was delightful. Even the kids' ramen offered a generous portion. The decor was fantastic, and the women’s bathroom featured a charming chair with a little sleeping Squirtle on it. A baby changing station would have made it even better.

Scenic Drive: Amazing Water Views

Enjoy a scenic drive along East Pine Street, passing Oakland Bay Marina to Bayshore. Here, you can soak in the calming waters and serene views amidst endless rows of trees.

Belfair

We drove 30 minutes from Shelton to Belfair.

Third Stop: Easy Hiking Trail

  • Theler Wetlands Trail
  • Address: 22803 WA-33, Belfair, WA 98528
  • Free parking
  • Free admission, donations warmly accepted.

This wetland preserve offers over 3 miles of flat, gravel trails and boardwalks through forests and marshes. You can even see a baby whale skeleton! Although dogs aren’t allowed on the trails, we noticed one family with a large dog. Since the boardwalks are narrow, visitors need to be considerate and follow the rules. The easy route is perfect for little kids to appreciate the local ecosystem with their tiny legs.

  • Haru Sushi Teriyaki & Wok
  • Address: 23969 WA-3 Ste A, Belfair, WA 98528

We love Japanese food, and we’re always hunting for the best ones in town. This restaurant is 4 minutes away from the Theler Wetlands Trail. Saul said a bit pricey, but the Poke Bowl is definitely worth it. It’s a major wow from the first bite.
