How It Started

I've personally grown during my travels, I recorded most of my experiences in my blog, however, I didn't get to write them down efficiently and look back at my experiences on paper. It's different when you write things down on paper, there's this magical connection you have with yourself when you're writing things down and reading them back to yourself. I started my gratitude journal and things are never the same. I see things in a different light and in a more positive way, I hope this post will encourage you to try it out and see how it goes - at least you get to try it. Here's a list of why you need a Gratitude Journal for traveling and for your everyday life.

1. Encourages mindfulness

A gratitude journal is a great tool for cultivating mindfulness and living in the present moment while traveling. By practicing mindfulness we tend to focus on the present moment and observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment. My gratitude journal has kept me grounded in the present, it sends me back to earth after a very exciting day of traveling.

2. Helps to appreciate the small moments and joys of the trip

I take a few minutes each day to reflect on what I am grateful for and write it down in my gratitude journal. As I regularly practice gratitude, I've noticed increased happiness in my life. I learned to say thanks for arriving in one piece at my destinations, and appreciate safe bus rides and even a safe flight back home. Also, like small things: a good meal without any after-effects of food poisoning, my passport still safe with me, getting lost but finding my way back to the hotel and so much more.

If you're looking for plane tickets check out Skyscanner, it's a great platform that our family used to compare flight tickets and we always get the best deals there. Our preferred platform for booking hotel stays is Booking.comgiven its reputation and the trust it has earned from countless travellers around the globe. Also for car rentals, we trust Enterprise to give us the best deals during our trip.

3. Increases positivity and happiness by focusing on the good in each day

Keeping a log of all the good things that happened has slowly eliminated my negativity towards my day. The gratitude journal has tremendously improved my mental health.

It didn't just help me with my travels but also with my daily life. I moved abroad shortly after finishing college, so I was away from my family and friends and loneliness lingered with me for some time.  Having a gratitude journal with me has helped reduce my symptoms of depression and anxiety. It made me realize why I'm in that situation and my dreams and visions for my future. It was like having a good listener and a silent cheerleader in my life.

4. Provides a record of memories to look back

I have my blog to do that for me but having a journal made me appreciate more of what I have in the present and for my future. As I believe that focusing on the good in life can lead to a more optimistic outlook. Every time I scanned through the old pages of my journals it brings a warm feeling to my heart, and a silent tap on my shoulder told me that everything we'll be ok.

5. Helps to shift focus away from negative experiences

My journal has helped me plan my days with more optimism which has shifted my attention away from boredom and negativity. It has pushed me to come out of my shell by engaging in activities that bring joy or happiness to my life. I was able to travel on my own, watch a movie alone, dine in a restaurant by myself and even join activities like yoga classes by myself- this was a huge deal for me! Now I know that being alone doesn't mean you are lonely, you're just practicing self-care which can boost your self-love towards yourself.

6. Improves overall mental health and well-being

As I continue to practice regular mindfulness and focus on the positive aspects of my life it has led to greater overall happiness. Once in a while I still get stressed from work, love, and life and that's just normal. However, I was able to handle it more, my stress level was manageable and I was able to relax which meant I had better sleep. I used to have trouble sleeping, and I still have sometimes but lesser now because I don't party anymore. Expressing gratitude before bed can help calm the mind and promote better sleep.

7. Encourages personal growth through self-reflection

Gratitude can help individuals cope with difficult situations and bounce back from adversity. It helps increase resiliency as you think differently now. Religiously using the gratitude journal can help shift your mindset towards gratitude and improve your thinking. By focusing on the positive aspects of my life, I learned to recognize my own accomplishments and blessings. It has greatly improved my self-esteem and confidence.

8. Improves your relationship towards others

I learned to deepen my relationships with my travel companions by sharing gratitude moments during my travels. As I practice more being grateful I dig deeper into understanding myself I've taught myself to be more empathetic. I was able to build stronger relationships and foster greater understanding and compassion towards others. Even thou I've migrated far from my friends and family I'm able to connect to them in a more meaningful way. I'm proud to say I have friends around the world whom I can count on, the distance might be a hindrance but we have made a solid foundation in our friendship that even if we're far I still feel closer to them.

I even asked my husband to join me in this mindfulness journey. He struggled at first, but eventually, he managed to pace with me and tries to draw his highlight of the day in a comic style instead of writing it down. He would then hand it over to me at the end of the night with a boyish grin, seeking my "wow" facial reaction. It's a great way to bond with each other and it really made our night more fun and interesting.

9. Cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for different cultures and experiences

By being more mindful I've developed a mindset of gratitude and respect towards diverse cultures and enhanced my understanding of the world. I learned to acknowledge the differences and helped me connect to people in my travels. We might say different words but there's always a simple way of showing thankfulness and kindness to everybody. A simple smile or a nod to say I see you and I am thankful for your kind gesture means the whole world to that person. Next thing you know, you have a free meal, or they share with you the hidden gems of their city and you'll have the best trip of your life- a true story! It happened on my first Trip to Bali.

10. Can serve as inspiration for future travel and adventures

My gratitude journal has inspired me to plan my future travel and adventures by keeping up a positive mindset and letting that inspiration fuel my future experiences!

This is also great for children as they learn the importance of looking at the brighter side of their day. I can't imagine how it would have been if I started early. The guided prompts will help them reflect on things they are thankful for. It is meant to be simple and easy to use, encouraging a positive mindset and appreciation for the good things in life.
