Sept 23: Mono Lake in September with a Toddler

On the last day of our mountain retreat in Mammoth Lakes, we took it easy in the morning. We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast of toast and coffee while admiring the stunning view of the mountains from our balcony at Juniper Springs Resort. Although it was a bit on the pricey side, the resort's comfort and coziness made it feel like a home away from home.

We took the Mammoth Scenic Loop and made our way to Mono Lake  – one of the oldest bodies of water on the continent.

How did the Tufa Towers Form?

  • The rock towers form when fresh water mixes with salty lake water.
  • It's formed when fresh water with calcium comes up through the lake’s water, which has a lot of carbonates.
  • When calcium meets carbonates, it makes limestone.
  • Over time, a tower grows around where the spring comes out.
