October 20: Explore Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
How to get there: Seiki Kyoto Station Hotel to Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
- By car or taxi: 30 minutes
- By public transportation: 40 minutes
Tips for Avoiding Crowds at Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
- Arrive in the early morning or late afternoon
- Visit on weekdays for a quieter experience
- Begin at the top and stroll down through Arashiyama – this is what we did!
Starting Point: Arashiyama
We took a taxi to the top of the area and walked down through Arashiyama.
Usually, people start at the back entrance of Tenryuji Temple, known as the North Gate, which is at the bottom and the main gateway to the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. We started at the top to avoid the crowds, and indeed there were fewer people where we started.

Mompush: I absolutely love this stroller! It’s ideal for both everyday use and travel. We’ve taken it on most of our trips; it’s conveniently foldable and lightweight.
Torii Gate
At the beginning of our stroll, we took some photos at the Torii Gate while we were still feeling good and looking fresh.
As we continued, we admired the charming street lined with traditional Japanese houses.
We strolled past a few souvenir shops along the way, including the Cocoon Store.
We discovered a hidden gem: Matcha Tea Making for 400 JPY, where we had the chance to prepare matcha the traditional way.
The restaurant offers traditional Japanese dishes and has a restroom. When we entered, they asked us to remove our shoes, adding an authentic touch to the experience. Typically, you don't need to take off your shoes in most casual dining venues. However, it is necessary to do so in traditional establishments. Also, be sure to wear the provided slippers while using the restroom. If you're interested in a formal tea ceremony, there are plenty of options available on Klook.
We continued our walk.
Bring some snacks, especially when pregnant and have a toddler in tow.

Afterwards, we continued walking and came across a well-decorated, fancy Native Store.
Tanuki Statues and a Ceramic Shop
We went in October, and the weather was just right.
When you reach the bamboo forest, be nice to other tourists. It will be crowded, so stay patient and keep smiling as you enjoy the view.
Pond
You’ll know you’re close when you start noticing more people heading toward the bamboo forest.
Welcome to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
Finally, we reached the bamboo forest, which was crowded, as expected. It can’t be helped, as it is one of the most popular destinations in Kyoto. While it is undeniably beautiful, the large crowds detract from the peace and serenity of the experience.
Don't forget to look up!
A short and sweet walk in the bamboo grove.
We went inside a few temples, and I forgot why, but this one was my favorite.
My brother purchased several charms and lucky souvenirs from this place; he even gifted me one for the safe arrival of the baby, and my heart just swelled with joy!
End Point: Back entrance of Tenryuji Temple/ North Gate
The North Gate, also known as the back entrance/exit, of Tenryuji Temple leads to the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Since many visitors begin their journey here, this area tends to be intensely crowded. We didn't even bother to get some snacks; the crowd was too much to bear, also we're saving our appetite for our food adventure in Osaka. Read more:

I hope this post inspires you to consider the alternative route to avoid the crowds at Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. We truly enjoyed our time walking and chatting on our way to the forest; in fact, the matcha tea-making experience was the highlight of my trip.
Have fun and be safe ^__^
