What to do in Bangkok on a Budget

Solo Trip To Bangkok For Two Days

An unplanned trip to Bangkok got me packing for merely just an hour. A close cousin of mine stays in the city and he's scheduled to fly to Canada soon. I've figured it's probably my last chance to see him again. Canada is quite far from my country, for sure it will take him years to visit our family again. Luckily, I was able to land on a promo fare ticket even though it was just one day before my desired date. I guess that's what we call it's meant to be! Let's go!

Travel Tips
  • For flights, Skyscanner is excellent for comparing the best airline deals.
  • For accommodations, our family trusts Booking.com for reasonable prices.

First Day

Budget: 150 SGD (less than 100 SGD without shopping)
Promo Ticket: 150 SGD (without check-in baggage)

Singapore to Bangkok via Tiger Airways

How to take the train in Bangkok

Airport to Ramkhamhaeng Station
Train Fare: 30 baht (one way)

The last time I visited Bangkok was around three years ago. I was excited to hop on the plane for my flight, thinking about all the great foods they have in the city just made my stomach churn. Even though it's been years since I visited Bangkok I still have a rough idea of how the train system works. Just to make sure you're on the right track check the Airport Information Touchscreen around the airport to find your location, search for transportation, and all kinds of details you need to know. It really came in handy because it showed me the way to the train link from the airport. I went to the ticketing machine: press English on the menu, select a destination, proceed to payment, and collect your red coin to tap on the entryway to the station.

Where to Stay in Bangkok

Check-in: Nasa Vegas Hotel
1 night: 25 SGD

Avail of the breakfast buffet one day ahead to get a discount of 140 baht

The hotel is just a few steps away from the train station. You don't need to go that far, just cross the bridge that links to the building. But they don't provide wifi something essential for travelers. Good thing my cousin shared his Wi-Fi hotspot with me.

I brought fresh chilled fruits at Pratunam Market for 40-60 baht while shopping for goodies.

Where to go

Pratunam Market

How to get there: Pratunam (Petchburi)
Train: Alight at Ratchaprarob Station, located behind Baiyoke Tower and 10 minutes away from the market.

Check out computer and camera gadgets:

How to get there: Pantip Plaza - IT Mall (Petchburi)
Location: Petchaburi Road, opposite Pratunam's City Complex
Train: Alight at BTS Chidlom Station, hire a tuk-tuk/taxi or walk ten minutes to Ratchadamri Road, pass by Central World on the left side, Saen Saeb canal, then go left to Phetburi Road and just two blocks away on your left is the Plaza.

It turned out that it was the perfect time for me to visit the city as they were having a food festival. Bangkok Varee is a floating market event from the 14th to the 31st of July 2016 at Central World in Bangkok, Thailand. It's considered the biggest Thai riverside cultural event in the city.

How to Get to the Central World Mall

Train: SkyTrain to E1 Chit Lom Station (Sukhumvit Line).
Take Exit 9. For Skybridge to Gaysorn Plaza and crossroad to Central World via flyover.

After exploring all the levels in the computer shopping mall we got pretty hungry. We were already in the shopping capital so going from one mall to another was easy. We walked back to Central World Mall through the link bridge. A pagoda replica seemed pretty lost in this part of the festival. We continued to walk around despite the warm humidity, so in order to battle Bangkok's heat, I bought a delicious coconut ice cream for 40 baht - so delicious!

Must-try Coconut Ice Cream when in Bangkok!

For dinner: salt-coated grilled fish, roasted pork, sticky rice, and this gigantic lime-maybe-mix-with-sprite refreshing drink.

Dessert: Huge Mango Slices for 100 baht

We needed to take a stroll after all the food we ate after dinner. So we decided to look around the area, we took the sky bridge right in front of Central World Mall and proceeded to a Street Night Market across the City Complex Mall.

Night Street Market

How to get there: City Complex (Petchburi)
Location: 831 Phetchaburi Road, Bangkok
Train: From Chit Lom BTS, walk past Central World Mall then take the sky bridge to access the mall.

Watched Finding Dory before Bedtime just for fun, ahahaa.

Second Day

Check out the Railway in Bangkok. I really like trains moving in the open air. It looks nostalgic like during those times when things seem to be plain and simple.

Waffle Snack before hopping to the train station.

Drop by for Tacos before going to the train interchange.

How to go to Terminal 21 Mall

Location: Sukhumvit Road (between Soi 19 and 21)
Train: Alight at Sukhumvit MRT Station or Asok BTS Station (direct access via Skybridge)

Traveled from Phetchaburi to Asok bound for Terminal 21 Mall. I love this mall. It has a complex personality, each mall level has its own country theme from Japan to Turkey to London, to Paris and even California in the USA.

Lunch at an authentic pizzeria restaurant called Pala Pizza Romano located at 1, Sukhumvit Platform (BTS Asok link to MRT), Asok Road Klongtoey Nua Bangkok.

Coffee before heading to the airport.
Bangkok to Singapore flight via Tiger Airways

Change is Coming. Perfect words to describe the future. I wish you all the best in your endeavor, may the good force be with and I'll see you soon.

Have fun and be safe ^__^
